With extensive experience in all facets of family law and related issues, Ric uses his experience to assist clients through the legal process trying always to be conscious that such issues are emotional and stressful for the client and their family.  Working together with his clients, Ric will assess what options are available to the client and will advise on how to best achieve their goals towards resolution.  This can include negotiation, collaboration, mediation, arbitration, litigation or a combination of any of these.  Along the way there will always be a cost benefit analysis which will be realistically discussed and considered.

Over the course of his career, Ric has appeared in all levels of the courts of Ontario and has also participated in some matters involving jurisdictions in the United States and other provinces in Canada by way of assisting counsel.  He is trained in collaborative law at a level II as well as trained in Intimate Partner Violence.  Ric is knowledgeable in negotiating and drafting all forms of family agreements such as marriage contracts, cohabitation agreements, separation agreements and parenting plans.  He is knowledgeable in dealing with corporate assets and trust assets in a separation, or in drafting cohabitation or marriage contracts.  He can also assist in variation of previous agreements or court orders as needed.  With changes in the economy and clients planning their retirement, they often need an opinion on whether an agreement or order can be varied or changed.

Other facets of family law are the transfer of real estate, dealing with family cottages, company shareholders, wills, powers of attorney, estate planning and, when needed, estate litigation.  Ric has the experience and knowledge to deal with these issues which often intersect with and must be considered in a family law matter.

Ric is a lifelong resident of the Region of Waterloo having attended the University of Waterloo and then pursuing his legal education at the University of Western Ontario.  He has been a member of the Law Society of Ontario since 1985 and is currently a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, the Waterloo Region Law Association and the Best4All Waterloo Region Collaborative Lawyers.

With four very active children (now adults) he has also been actively involved with local organizations such as Laurel Creek Track and Field, Waterloo Regional Synchronized Swimming, and various baseball, hockey, field hockey and basketball organizations.  Those were the days.
